Visual Kei is a complicated story.

It first started with these three amazing bands: X-Japan, BUCK-TICK, Malice Mizer, and Dead End. In the 1990s, it started to pop off, mostly in Japan and then in western countries a few years later.

It is known for their "visual" and music, mostly known for their elaborate clothing and music.

It's known as a genre with TONS of subgenres in it.

The "visual kei" came from one of X Japan's slang, "Psychedelic Violence Crime of Visual Shock". The name was shortened down to Vkei with both western and eastern fans.
